It really is lucky that a reasonable character like Magath is on the top of command here and not someone like Gross.Įqually, on the Marlyean Eldian side, Gabi is also just an angry kid who lost her friends. There are good people on both sides of the attack, the lower ranked soldiers just have to act according to what the higher-ups tell them to. It might even be a specific point the story is trying to make - it’s really hard to notice goodness when everything around you is horrible. With all the exploration of the darkness within the Marley system, it is easy to forget that characters like these soldiers and even Magath exist. There are actually good people on Marley’s side, too. Death is shown as equally cruel for all fractions - from the Eldian civilians, to the Marleyan soldiers to the SL’s soldiers. I continue to love the fact that the narrative doesn’t pick sides when it comes to cruelty.
